    Why use an internet stability monitor?

    A speed test tells you how fast your connection was for the ten seconds you were watching it. That is the wrong measurement for the most common home and office problem: a line that is fine almost all of the time and then stalls, drops, or crawls for thirty seconds while you are in a call. By the time you open a speed test, the problem has usually gone.

    This page takes the opposite approach. It measures continuously, in the background, and keeps a record. Leave it open on a second monitor and you end up with something far more useful than a single number: the exact times your connection misbehaved, how long each episode lasted, and how bad the latency got. That is the evidence an internet provider will actually act on.

    How to use it

    1. Press Start monitoring. The first samples appear within a couple of seconds.
    2. Watch the graph settle for a minute to learn what normal latency looks like on your connection.
    3. Set Alert above a little higher than that normal figure, so only genuine spikes make a sound.
    4. Raise Bad samples before alert if a single slow reading is enough to set it off.
    5. Switch on an extra probe target if you need to prove the problem is your connection rather than one website.
    6. Leave the tab open and check the event log afterwards for the times and durations of each episode.

    FAQ

    Does this tool really ping my connection?

    No browser can send an ICMP ping, so the monitor times a small HTTP request instead. It measures the same round trip to a server and back, which is what a ping reports, and it is accurate enough to show latency spikes and dropouts as they happen.

    What do the alert sounds mean?

    A single soft tone means a sample came back slower than your alert threshold. Two falling tones mean no target answered at all, so the connection looks down. Both repeat gently while the problem lasts and stop on their own once the connection recovers.

    How do I silence the alerts without stopping the monitor?

    Tick Mute alerts. The page keeps probing, graphing, and recording episodes in the event log; it just stops making any sound.

    What alert threshold should I use?

    Let the graph run for a minute first to see what normal latency looks like on your connection, then set the threshold a little above that. Setting it far below your usual figure makes the tool alert constantly, which tells you nothing.

    Does the monitor keep working when I switch to another tab?

    Yes, as long as background sampling is left on. Browsers slow timers in a hidden tab to roughly once a minute, so the page holds an inaudible tone open, which keeps it running at full speed. Your browser will show a speaker icon on the tab while that is happening.

    Why does a probe sometimes fail while my internet still works?

    A single host can be unreachable while your connection is fine. That is why you can switch on more than one target: if every target stops answering the problem is your connection, and if only one stops it is that server.

    Can I use the results to report a problem to my internet provider?

    That is what the event log is for. It records the start time, end time, duration, and worst latency of every degraded or offline episode, which is far more convincing than saying the connection feels slow.

    Is anything about my connection sent to a server?

    No. The measurements, the graph, and the event log stay in your browser and are never uploaded. The probes are ordinary timed requests, and any extra target you switch on is contacted directly by your browser, so that host sees only your IP address as it would for any visit.
